Suffix:  -ness

      Part of speech: adjective

Words in bold are the more commonly used.

Some, but not all, are derived from nouns.

 

-ness can be added to some adjectives with suffix –ful or –less to make a noun:

carelessness

faithfulness

fearlessness

heartlessness

weightlessness

 

Other nouns with –ness suffix

 

blindness

boldness

darkness

dizziness

goodness

happiness

kindness

laziness

politeness

sadness

silliness

thickness

weakness

weariness

 

Many of these nouns are formed from adjectives ending in  -y (pretty – prettiness,

 happy – happiness)

 

-ous -er and -or Pairs -y -ful and -less -ness -ship
